Wacom Cintiq Companion 2 Review – “It’s Terrible”

Hello world! Well just about a month and a half ago from today I decided to purchase a Wacom Cintiq Companion 2. Most of my work day to day is in the realm of design. Whether I might be designing, developing, creating, or just searching the internet or writing up documents.

So the obvious choice for my next laptop would be something that enables me to do my job more efficiently. I got a few suggestions from my professors and current students who have been drooling over the idea of a portable drawing tablet with a screen. I decided on getting myself one as an early Christmas present for myself.

Amazon Purchasing Review

I ordered the Intel i7 + 512 gb SSD version on Amazon for somewhere around $1,700 at the time.

With Amazon, the item is eligible for Prime Shipping which came as promised in two days.

Wacom Cintiq Companion 2 Experience

I got the tablet in, opened it up, unpacked it, set it up, and loaded up Photoshop. The Cintiq worked like a charm in Photoshop. Put ZBrush on, sculpted a few models, and I was surprised at first on how well it took on the tasks. For the first week, I was very happy with my decision.

The problem with the tablet

That is of course until the day where I was sculpting a torso of a zombie in ZBrush. When I was working on my model, all of a sudden my computer shut down. This wouldn’t come to much of a shock if it restarted after at the time. But because it made no attempt to restart itself, it hinted to the almost definite possibility that the computer is having some sort of hardware issues. Whether it be a temperature control problem, or a battery/power supply problem, faulty wiring, or a failing part. But the real problem is when the computer will consistently shut down upon logging in. I have a good bit of experience with troubleshooting computers. Regardless, I’m not taking apart a brand new computer to fix it if its faulty. So I called up Amazon and told them about the situation, and thankfully they were able to send me a replacement.

Same Issue, Different Computer

No problems arise until around 2 weeks later. At that point in time, I was searching the web when it randomly shut down on me again. I attempted to start the computer back up and it wouldn’t let me even get to the login screen until I booted the computer in safe mode. At that point, I pulled my files to my backup drive and made another call to Amazon.

Like dragon-riding knight in shining armor, Amazon refunded me for the product. I vow on never using any Companion products by Wacom again.

I’m just going to focus on getting a beefy average laptop and getting my Wacom 13HD fixed up. Wacom, I’m a fan of your drawing tablets. Just don’t do hardware unless you do it right. To Amazon, keep being amazing. I appreciate all your help with the situation.
